Batam DPRD Reveals Heartbreaking Story of Unpaid Workers, PT Merah Putih Takes Noble Action

BATAM, Indonesia – Sometimes, compassion speaks louder than contracts. This was proven by PT Merah Putih Shipyard, a shipbuilding company in Tanjung Uncang, Batam, that chose humanity over legality when a group of subcontracted workers were left unpaid.

The issue began when workers hired by subcontractor PT Sumber Riau Indonesia (SRI) reported they hadn’t received their wages for their work on a shipbuilding project. With Eid al-Adha approaching, their situation grew more desperate.

Despite having no legal obligation, PT Merah Putih Shipyard decided to cover the unpaid wages of these workers—a gesture that speaks volumes about the company’s conscience.

“We truly appreciate this extraordinary move. Even though they had no contractual responsibility, PT Merah Putih Shipyard stepped in out of compassion,” said Dandis Rajagukguk, Chairman of Commission IV of the Batam City Council, on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

The decision followed a public hearing led by Commission IV, involving the Batam Manpower Office, Labor Supervisory Unit of the Riau Islands Province, and PT Merah Putih’s management. The subcontractor, PT SRI, failed to attend.

“We asked PT Merah Putih to consider a special solution, and they responded with empathy,” Dandis explained.

He emphasized that this decision should set an example for other businesses, especially in Batam’s shipyard industry.

“Too many companies are focused solely on profit. But PT Merah Putih showed that it’s possible to run a business with heart,” he said.

Looking ahead, Dandis urged main contractors to be more selective in choosing subcontractors.

“Don’t just go for the lowest bid. Check their track record in handling workers’ rights. This should not happen again,” he concluded.(kyy)
