BATAMCLICK.COM: Behind the high walls of Class IIA Correctional Facility in Batam, a new hope is emerging. Twenty inmates are preparing to take their first step toward a brighter future—by learning foreign languages.
Batam Prison has launched a free English and Mandarin language training program in collaboration with Batam Tourism Polytechnic (BTP). More than just a language course, this initiative is part of a broader rehabilitation effort to equip inmates with practical skills they can use both during their sentence and after release.
“This partnership marks the beginning of a sustainable collaboration to empower and build the capacity of our inmates,” said Warden Yugo Indra Wicaksi on Tuesday, during the signing of a cooperation agreement with BTP.
During their visit to the BTP campus, Warden Yugo and his team toured various educational facilities and training rooms. They also held a coordination meeting to discuss the structure of the upcoming language courses.
“We truly appreciate BTP’s support. This isn’t just about education—it’s about giving second chances, hope, and dignity back to our inmates,” Yugo added.
The English and Mandarin courses will be offered to 20 selected inmates. Previously, the prison successfully ran a German language course for another group of 20 participants.
Through initiatives like these, Batam Prison is proving that correction is more than punishment—it is about transformation, learning, and rebuilding lives.
