Govt looking to replicate Japan’s success in managing lakes: Official

BATAMCLICK.COM : Director general of watershed management and forest rehabilitation at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Dyah Murtiningsih, has said that her party will seek to replicate Japan’s success in managing lakes.

Murtiningsih conveyed this at a meeting on “Urgent Call to Save our Lakes” at the 10th World Water Forum in Nusa Dua, Bali, on Tuesday.

“We can adopt Japan’s success in managing Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture. We can learn together,” she noted.

Following the sharing session on sustainable lake management, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry will continue its collaboration with Japan through cooperation after the World Water Forum, she informed.

“After this meeting, we will start the cooperation on lake management,” she said.

According to her, discussions regarding the sustainable management of lakes are important because 80 percent of the water as a source of demand comes from lakes.

“In this session, we invited various agencies, both national and international, to share and learn from Lake Biwa management in Japan and the management of Rawa Pening Lake in Indonesia,” Murtiningsih informed.

She said that her party is committed to protecting the lake as one of the world’s water sources and maintaining its sustainability.

During the meeting, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry collaborated with Central Java province to share information about the management of Rawa Pening Lake. The information was directly presented by Central Java acting governor Nana Sudjana.

The session was also attended by representatives from the Foreign Affairs Ministry; executive director of the UN Environment Program, Inger Andersen; acting executive secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, David Cooper; secretary general of the Convention on Wetlands, Musonda Mumba; and the president of the International Lake Environment Committee Foundation, Kazuhiko Takemoto.

Meanwhile, the governor of Japan’s Shiga Prefecture, Taizo Mikazuki, made a presentation on Lake Biwa’s management at the meeting. He was accompanied by chairperson of the Indonesian Watershed Forum, Ida Bagus Putera Parthama.
