BATAMCLICK.COM : The Indonesian Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) handed over Rp250 million (US$14 thousand) in Ready-to-Use Funds (DSP) and logistical support and disaster emergency management equipment to Kubu Raya District, West Kalimantan.

“BNPB disbursed assistance worth Rp250 million and logistical support as well as emergency management equipment for floods, whirlwinds, and landslides to Kubu Raya,” Head of the Information Task Force for the West Kalimantan Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Daniel, stated on Friday.

Daniel then outlined the logistical assistance and emergency disaster equipment comprising two refugee tents; 30 family tents; basic necessities; 250 packages of ready-to-eat food, hygiene kits, blankets, family kits, and mattresses; 1,080 bottles of liquid soap; a rubber boat with engine; two generators; one light tower; five water pumps; 30 velbeds; and five floating pumps.

This assistance was handed over directly by BNPB to Acting Head of Kubu Raya District, Sy Kamaruzaman, for disaster victims in the region, especially at the Kuala Mandor B Sub-district, Daniel remarked.

“We thanked BNPB for its assistance. We will distribute the assistance to the people in Kuala Mandor B Sub-district,” Kamaruzaman remarked.

Based on data from the disaster report of June 5, 2024, the villages of Kuala Mandor A and Retok in Kubu Raya District were inundated due to torrential rains causing an overflowing of the river and resulting in floods. Some 5,017 people from 1,367 families and 1,367 houses, as well as five social facilities have been affected by the flooding, Daniel remarked.

Currently, an emergency response disaster status is declared in the region until June 9, 2024. The Kubu Raya BPBD also carried out emergency handling, such as conducting data collection, evacuating victims, and monitoring, as well as coordinating with the West Kalimantan BPBD for further action.

Daniel said floods often occur in Kubu Raya District due to its lowland topography with the downstream part of several rivers in West Kalimantan. These conditions result in floods caused by torrential rains that occur quickly while the waters recede slowly.
